UP FOR AUCTION – Portrait of Lady Mary Booth – Fourth Countess of Stamford.

Attention all Booth Ancestry followers and interested parties….an extremely rare painting, or as the auctioneer would say, “a rare offering” has come up for auction on the 19th January 2022 in Miami, Florida, USA. Anyone can guess how it ended up here, but I am sure the auctioneers have an interesting story behind its provenance.

Update : Further enquiries regarding the provenance of this painting or any history of how it came to be in Miami has not been forthcoming. However, the auctioneers happily supplied a condition report.

Interestingly, the artist Thomas Hudson has his work on display at the Tate Gallery in London, and entrepreneur and philanthropist Mr John Booth is a trustee of the Tate Gallery.

John Booth was also recently appointed chairman of the National Gallery and chairs several public and private companies, including Maintel plc and the London Theatre Company. He is a non-executive director of three investment management businesses and has a range of venture capital interests in e-commerce, media and telecommunications. He is Chairman of The Prince’s Trust and Pallant House Gallery and a trustee of Chatsworth House, the Arts Foundation and several other charities.

It would be even more interesting if we discovered he was related to the noble Booth’s on this site.
