Charles Booth

Charles James Booth – famous for his Booth Steamship Company and the Alfred Booth & Co.  Empire. His tireless work in England for poverty reform and his philanthropy brought about amazing change for the poor and underpriviliged classes. He was almost single handedly responsible for the Aged Pension we have in Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.  He was offered a Knighthood and declined.

I would have liked to have met this man. He and his wife were devoted to helping others and their biography makes interesting reading. Charles appears in The Modern Booths section of this Blog with some links.
